Goals in life

Last week my grandchild asked me – what should I be when I grow older?

I asked myself the same question many decades ago. In the course of life, I have learnt a few things. But one stands out.

Setting clear and tangible goals and objectives is critical. In this connection, if you get the chance, do read Psycho Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. It was written more than 50 years ago. It is probably the best self-help book ever written.

Cybernetics translates to- a helmsman who steers his ship to port. Maltz suggested, based on his research, that the process of setting goals, if they are clear, realistic and vividly imagined, assist in channelling all your energies and motivation to their achievement.

It’s important your goals or objectives are not conceived in the abstract – like a resolution. You need to actually see yourself doing what you want to do, to being what you want to be, to feeling what it is like to achieve your goal. Your imagination is powerful, and it can be used to make goals real, tangible and therefore even more desirable.

Let your imagination free to do its work. It works. It has worked for me.
